#SECULARSTATE

We the people of India, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN SOCIALISTIC SECULAR REPUBLIC,to secure to all its citizens.

Feels like you have read it somewhere?.

Dont stress your mind too much, that is the preamable of the constitution,Indians implemented in 1950.

-That guaranteed citizenship to all of the country's residents at the commencement of the constitution, and made no distinction on the basis of religion.

-The Indian government passed the Citizenship Act in 1955.

- The Act provided two means for foreigners to acquire Indian citizenship. People from undivided India, were given a means of registration after seven years of residency in India. Those from other countries were given a means of naturalisation after eleven years of residency in India.

But why do we need this now?.

-The Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which leads the Indian government, had promised in previous election manifestos to offer Indian citizenship to persecuted religious minorities from neighboring countries.

-Under the 2019 amendment, migrants who had entered India by 31 December 2014, and had suffered "religious persecution or fear of religious persecution" in their country of origin were made eligible for citizenship. The amendment also relaxed the residence requirement for naturalization of these migrants from eleven years to five.

-Immediate beneficiaries of the Bill, according to the Intelligence Bureau of India, will be 31,313 refugees: 25,447 Hindus, 5,807 Sikhs, 55 Christians, 2 Buddhists and 2 Parsis.

-But this act triggered protests across the India.

-The protests began in Assam,Delhi,Meghalaya,Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura on 4 December 2019.

Why Indian citizens are out on roads protesting aganist this bill?.

-The Amendment leaves out Muslims and others from these countries, as well as Tamil refugees from Sri Lanka, Rohingyas from Myanmar, and Buddhist refugees from Tibet.

-The protests started in Assam on 4 December 2019, after the bill was introduced in parliament.

-Later on, protests erupted in Northeast India, and subsequently spread to the major cities of India.

- On 15 December, major protests took place near Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi and Aligarh Muslim University.

-As the protests spread private and public property was burnt and destroyed by mobs, some railway stations vandalized.

-Police forcibly entered the campus of Jamia, used batons and tear gas on the students, and more than 200 students were injured and around 100 were detained overnight in the police station. The police action was widely criticized, and resulted in students across the country protesting in solidarity.  -The protests have resulted in thousands of arrests and 27 deaths as of 27 December 2019.

-Two 17-year old minors were among those reported to have been killed due to police firing live ammunition on protesters in Assam.

-On 19 December, the police issued a complete ban on protests in several parts of India. As a result of defying the ban, thousands of protesters were detained.

-So far, at least seven states have announced that they will not implement the Act or the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

-While five states and two union territories[69] have refused to implement the CAA, two other states, have only declined the implementation of the NRC.

-However the Union Home Ministry said that states lack the legal power to stop the implementation of Citizenship Amendment Act.

-On the other hand on 19 November 2019,Home Minister Amit shah declared implementation of a nation wide NRC.

What is NRC and who will be affected by the implementation of a nation wide NRC?

-NRC NATIONAL REGISTER OF CITIZENS is a register of all indian citizens, mandeted by Citizenship amendment Act 1955 which indian government ammended in 2003.

-For now NRC is only implemented in Assam,

which grants the indian citizenship to people of Assam, only if they prove their ancestors lived in India before 24 March 1971.

-If this NRC is implemented across the India,Hindus, christians, jains, sikhs without Indian citizenship will be granted Indian citizenship due to this Citizenship amendment Act 2019.

-But the Muslims with out proper documents to prove their ancestors lived in India before march 24 1971 will be sent to detention centres.

-UN released a press note stating this Citizen ship amendment bill passed by india is discriminatory in nature.

while indiam government is planning for a door to door awareness programme on CAA.To implement CAA by hook or crook.
